Au Pair
What Is an Au Pair?
The Au Pair program is a cultural exchange opportunity for young individuals (ages 17-27) who live with a host family, commonly referred to as a Gastfamilie. The program’s purpose is to immerse participants in the language, culture, and daily life of a foreign country for a set period, usually lasting from 6 months to 1 year.
As an Au Pair, you’ll be treated like a member of the family and expected to assist with childcare and household tasks, providing additional support to the parents.
AU PAIR RIGHTS

Privacy
You will have privacy by having your own bedroom.
Monthly Pocket Money
In addition to full accommodation provided by the host family, you will also receive a monthly allowance.
(Marsha receives a monthly allowance of €280 in Germany, €450 in Austria, and 720 CHF in Switzerland).
German Language Course
One of the goals of the Au Pair program is also to learn the language of the host country in depth. Therefore, you are encouraged to attend advanced German language courses in the host country.
According to regulations in Germany, the host family is required to cover language course fees up to €840 per year. In Austria, the family must cover up to 50% of the cost. In Switzerland, the language course fees are covered 100% by the host family.
AU PAIR RESPONSIBILITIES
What Are the Duties of an Au Pair?
To ensure that the Au Pair program runs smoothly and enjoyably, it's important to understand your responsibilities as an Au Pair. This article explains in detail what you need to do.
Childcare
In addition to supervising, you also have specific duties, such as:
- Dropping off and picking up the children from school/kindergarten/other extracurricular activities (if you have an international driver's license valid in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, it will make it easier for you to find a host family more quickly).
- Preparing meals and feeding the children if both parents are at work.
- Accompanying and playing with the children.
Light Household Chores
The family will also expect you to take over light household duties such as:
- Preparing breakfast and lunch boxes for the children.
- Cleaning and tidying the kitchen, living room, and children's rooms.
- Doing laundry and washing dishes (in Europe, modern washing machines and dishwashers are available).
Note: Most host families hire a cleaner (Putzfrau), so you are not expected to clean the entire house.
Cultural Learning
It is also expected that you learn and integrate into the host country’s culture, for example:
- Learning the culture and lifestyle of the family.
- Participating in family events.
- Respecting the family’s culture and traditions.
